Education Inequality in New York City Schools

The Funding Gap has also been an issue of the inequality of schools besides race. The primary controls of the distribution of funds are in the hands of the state while the Federal is there to supplement state and local resources. A report done by the Education Trusts shows that in 2004, 36 states had a funding gap, with a nationwide disparity between high-poverty and low-poverty districts of $1,348 per students (Tavernise, 2012). Not all states are equally balance, and have the average funding per students, which is $1,348, there are some states that are under the average. There are states such as Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New Jersey who have a positive funding gap, which conclude that the resources they have are given to their highest poverty districts (Tavernise, 2012). Funding gaps will be a great benefit in creating a equality in education because a school that has sufficient funds are able to teach their students with the proper materials, and the right environment.
One of the nation's largest school systems is New York City who on a average student outcomes and their opportunity to learn are more determined by the neighborhood where a child lives, than his or her abilities. With New York City being known as the city where all cultures collides with one another, that collision impacts on the equality of the students education. A report of the Schott Foundation for Public Education has indicated that communities where blacks, Hispanics, and even the city's poor students live have suffer from the New York polices and practices which gives their schools the fewest resources, and the least experiences teachers (Kozol, 1999, p. 106). On the other hand, the schools those are best funded and with the highest percentage of experienced teachers are located in the neighborhoods that are economically advantaged. Whether it is between a private New York City school or a public school, the demographics between race, or even the different resources that New York City gives to schools to certain neighborhood, education inequality is a major issue that keeps on growing here in New York City.
