A World of Water and Not a Drop to Drink

.
More often than not, water resources are owned and maintained by public organizations such as local governments and when these public resources are sold to private companies this is known as privatization. Some people argue that privatization of water is a necessary evil but opponents to water privatization may argue that private companies will ignore environmental concerns and that their only goal will be to make profits .Private companies tend to only look at their short-term benefits and profits and are usually not invested in a community. They may easily overlook the long-term consequences of their water practices. Water privatization will not solve the problem of worldwide water distribution and the global water crisis. The world's water supply is not evenly distributed around the planet which has led to human suffering. Some countries are lucky enough to have an almost unlimited supply of fresh water for agriculture and industry which they export while other countries struggle for enough water to sustain their populace. Recently there has been an effort to export water from areas that seem to have an abundance. It has been proposed that 80 million gallons of fresh water be removed from Alaska's Blue Lake and shipped to India for bottling and distribution to countries in the Middle East (Interlandi). This is not a permanent solution to the water crisis.
"A recent World Bank study predicted that demand for fresh water will exceed supply by some forty percent within just two decades" (EarthTalk). As the world's population grows, so does the urgency of the world water crisis. The term water crisis involves many aspects such as water pollution, water shortage causing global food shortage and water conflict over dwindling resources. The water crisis is a term used to refer to the world's water resources relative to human demand. When there is a shortage of water drought and starvation almost always follow.
