Life, Logic and Reason

Actor and diplomat, Sidney Poitier said, "If you apply logic and reason to this career of mine, you're not going to get very far. You simply won't. The journey has been incredible from its beginning. So much of life, it seems to me, is determined by pure randomness"." Poitier became the first black person to win the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in the 1963 movie, "Lilies of the Field." He also directed the several films, many of which were credited for being "spontaneous and different," the most successful being the Richard Pryor-Gene Wilder comedy "Stir Crazy," which for years was the highest grossing film directed by a person of African descent. Poitier's views on the application of logic is parallel to that of Andre Gide that "Life escapes logic, and everything built on logic is artificial and limited". Sidney Poitier also writes that if he had always used the way of logic he would have never achieved half the things he has in his lifetime. Of course this is debatable. That said; logic in its purest form is our basis of judgment, without it we would be unable to make decisions and distinguish between right and wrong. For example logic allows us to recognize lies told to us by the media so that we do not buy certain products or believe only what we're told without ever questioning what is true. It gives objectivity when making decisions about our lives, some of which may be life changing and this is important in the progression of one's life. Its importance is not dismissed nor ignored but it should be argued that although logic is a vital tool to help humans understand the world, one ought to be careful not to believe that it is an all powerful tool or the only tool for that matter. .
Logic aims at making our thinking more clear and accurate so that we may reach conclusions of truth and factuality. It follows a pattern of rules in order for the truth to be unraveled. This is evident when two or more parties make claims for or against a particular subject.
