Television is a very important part of the American society today. It is estimated that "the average American watches up to 6.75 hours of television daily" The right to free speech has long been considered one of the most fundamental liberties protected by the Constitution. But even it has been sacrificed in the name of the TV censorship, sometimes in shockingly dramatic ways. Recently, the government has taken measures to control what you hear and see on the television. Have you ever watched a movie on TV and noticed that there were a lot of scenes missing? This is because our government has deemed those scenes inappropriate, and believes the American public would be better off not seeing those things. My question to you is: do you really want someone telling you what you can and can't watch? I don't know about you guys but I"d rather choose for myself.
England like many other countries is still fighting with themselves whether they should follow the United States" lead. A new poll on TV censorship performed by the BBC suggests four out of five viewers would rather censor their own viewing, rather than watch poorly cut films. The study, Making Sense of Censorship, found that three quarters of those surveyed thought cuts in movies shown on television were the least appropriate methods of controlling content. Eighty two percent of those polled believed they should be able to make up their own mind on what their household watches. But most stressed that clear information should be given regarding the film's content and suitability. .
Particular concern was paid to children, with 98% of adult respondents saying it was their responsibility to monitor family viewing. Significantly, 65% of those polled were more concerned about effective censorship on the internet, rather than on television and in films. If I was a parent, I would be a lot more concerned about what my child is going to be exposed to on the internet and on the streets then what he or she would be exposed to on television.
