Individual is the third type of freedom, Individual freedom means we are able to make our own choices, wear what we want to wear, from cutoffs to bellbottoms, top hats to stocking hats, wear our shirts in or wear our shirts out, hair color and hair extensions, tattoos and piercing. Individual freedom gives individuals the freedom to express themselves in a way that makes that person feel good about themselves. Individual freedom is walking into the ice cream parlor and selecting one of 50 flavors to devour. Individual freedom is going to bed early, sleeping in, and eating take-out from a restaurant for dinner when you just don't feel like cooking. Individual freedom is roving the seacoast for a private fishing hole and dropping a line at 5 a.m. Individual freedom also means walking down to the city library and checking out any book you choose or logging onto the net when you get home. Individual freedom is independence of action, acting from inner-self consciousness without being dependent on anything. Individual freedom does not mean taking off your clothes in public or throwing your trash on the ground. Individual freedom is choosing no boundaries and then applying appropriate behavior. Individual freedom is not sitting in the middle of the road until a truck runs us over, but being able to see the truck at all, and then taking appropriate action. .
Freedom is an illusive quality. We think that if we can go where we wish and do many things we are free. Far from it, freedom has to do with our inner state. Ultimately freedom is having no habits at all, good or bad, and living in the exquisiteness of the moment without worry or fears. We are like a judge who sentences himself to prison and then forgets he has the power to free himself. It takes much more courage to be free than to be bound. Our freedom is limited by the corresponding freedoms of others. Our freedom is also limited by our knowledge of the choices available.
