The Puritans in New England


            Instead of coming to the colonies for the incentives of economy and freedom, the Puritans came to create a purer Christian society based on a strict code of morals and emphasis on the community and family. New England was not, at first, a land of economic opportunity but a place to put firm roots down for a truer Christian Society. Although the Church did lose a significant amount of power by mid-century, it remained a significant foundation and guiding force in New England. .
             John Winthrop talks about how we must stay tightly knit and stay as one in his city on a hill speech. While a map shows a town that looks as though someone literally knit their houses to be almost the same size. Although some family farms were slightly different sizes, the houses were similar in size. The family side of Puritan New England was perfect, it gave everyone equal housing and a piece of land. Without any of this, the North would not have prospered as well as it had. The formation of New England towns were built on this. .
             It also shows a school house in the town, across the town Village Green from the Church. This is very unique to New England, where there were no real schools in the South, no need to learn to read or write. They needed to know how to read the Bible, so they could follow along in the sermons, and understand what is actually happening instead of being herded by a priest. .
             While they were off to an excellent start with their education, their religious freedom was low if at all. Talk about religious freedom. While {think of something} is more up front about it, saying that we need it, that it does not make sense to not have it, and that it would be immoral to not have religious freedom. While we can also see that we need to change more than just the religion freedom laws if we want to stay together and not wither away and die.
