Americans struggle to find self-fulfillment because they do not know what happiness truly is. The definition of self-fulfillment is the fulfillment of one's hopes and dreams. Many Americans chase fame, popularity, and money, and when they achieve it they still aren't happy. They fail to understand the true meaning of happiness. Sixty percent of Americans are unhappy because they aren't content, despite America having the highest standard of living (Ciochetti). It has nothing to do with the amount of a bi-weekly check, or the type of car, or the number of houses a person owns. Because Americans have be manipulated into believing they are entitled to a life of luxury, they do not take the time to understand who they are as an individual, and their true aspirations. Something that brings happiness cannot be measured by dollars; it can only be measured by worth. Worth is not measured in happiness. It is measured in meaningfulness. How meaningful is becoming a CEO versus becoming a father?.
From an early age Americans are indoctrinated into a belief that material wealth brings happiness. This is caused through media. Shown on these media outlets are stars, people who contribute little to society and boast their riches. For example, many "reality " television show very little reality. In reality, Joe Millionaire is no millionaire, nor did he and his wife win a million dollars on the last episode; the Kardashians are not much of a family since they fight over each other's money; and the Real Housewives are a group of divorced women with too much annulment money. All these programs have one thing in common, money. These people are "happy " because they have money; rather, they appear to be happy when they are actually miserable.
