Globalization, Food and Healthy Eating

British Columbia produces only 48% percent of all the food its population consume; therefore half of their population would go hungry without importing essential items (Pelletier, 1). British Columbia does not produce oranges, bananas, lemons, rice and wheat nor do they have coffee or cocoa plantations (Pelletier, 1). Without wheat they wouldn't have flour for breads, cookies pastries etc. Most animal feed is not produced locally. This could result in a shortage of chicken and the eggs they produce. British Columbia's largest export industry is farmed salmon. The feed for the salmon comes from Peru. If they were unable to import the feed needed to raise salmon, many people would be unemployed and food shortage would exist (Pelletier, 2). .
Continuing to keep the food market global is key to enabling each consumer to purchase the same product whether in New York City or the Horn of Africa. In a country such as Ghana, where thirty percent of the nation's population lives in poverty, it's certainly a nation actively engaging the global food supply chain (Wollan, 1). The Tajideen Group, a limited-liability contractor for the Tyson Foods Corporation, employs over 1,000 employees that work hand-in-hand with the corporation to actively distribute its chicken throughout the country and beyond (Wollan, 1). This partnership allows for the inhabitants to enjoy the same chicken us American's love, at a more affordable price than purchasing from a local farmer. This partnership creates what is called a "Domino Effect". Not only do the people of Ghana get to enjoy great tasting and affordable chicken, their economy gets a boost from the revenue produced by a corporate giant such as Tyson Foods. The American economy, as a whole, benefits as well, not only an individual town or city.
Local farming has grown popular and has great community support. Consumers have the choice of purchasing from these farmers when products are available.
