Changing the National Education Standards

Teachers may notice signs of a learning struggle, but with how strict the standards are becoming they aren't able to slow down and give individual guidance that's needed. Pushing the teachers to intensify the material the students learn in order to meet standards is a big issue for children who may already be struggling. Children struggle with learning for many different reasons but "with the current emphasis on standardized tests at the state level, the instructional practices of the classroom teacher may not be aligned with best practices as recommended by the National Research Council (1999) and Zemelman, Daniels, and Hyde (1998) and, consequently, may be turning certain groups of students off from learning" (Moon). Teachers are teachers for a reason. It's not like being a teacher is something anyone can do; it's not just any old entry level job. It takes heart and a lot of education in which they spend years of their life dedicating to becoming the best they can. They would not be mentally established if they just passed college because they were taught to just pass the exams. What kind of teacher would that be? " The amount of out-of-field teaching nationwide "remains unacceptably high, with classes in high-poverty and high-minority schools much more likely to be assigned to a teacher lacking minimal academic qualifications in the subject being taught," the report concluded."(DeWayne). Teachers are being set-up to fail their students by being required to teach a subject they were not educated for. "Many states are also imposing accountability through "high-stakes" testing. If testing reveals that schools don't meet the new standards, students aren't allowed to graduate, teachers forfeit salary increases and schools lose their accreditation" (Koch). This is not only detrimental to the students' education but the teachers' career as well.
