Civic Responsibility

Civic responsibility is a social commitment that is beneficial because it supports the community's well-being by applying personal contributions. It is based on the knowledge that the health of local, national, and global communities are dependent on people's interactions. Simple actions such as helping someone in need and being a good citizen to more complicated acts such as addressing millions of people for a worthy cause are all examples of civic responsibility.
Civic responsibility is seen throughout our history, but one of the most monumental acts would be the famous "I Have a Dream " speech. Martin Luther King Jr. took up a noble cause and decided to act upon it. He fought racial discrimination peacefully and sought to better his community for his family and his people as well as future generations. This is civic responsibility because he had the courage to fight for what he believed in and he believed that by contributing to the cause he would be supporting the well-being of the community.
These acts do not have to be as monumental as presenting a speech in front of millions of people but can be as small as helping someone in need. For example, in the short story Cathedral by Raymond Carver, a man attempts to explain what a cathedral looks like to a blind man. The man is performing civic responsibility because he is interacting in a beneficial way. He is not only helping the blind man but is also helping himself by achieving a deeper knowledge of his community and how to help the people in his community. .
Another example, of civic responsibility would be from Ted Brader's "Campaigning for Hearts and Minds ". His article brings awareness to the different influences of advertising and is helping the community by keeping it informed. He displays civic responsibility because he believes that by creating this article he is contributing to the broader community and acknowledges the importance of people's interactions by pointing out their pitfalls.
