Net Neutrality in the United States

             Data Blocking: This is another form of content limitation. Instead of the amount of data being limited, the type of data is limited instead. Some scenarios like blocking illegal content or phishing sites can be ideal. However, data blocking can be overused without the presence of net neutrality. One often used example is when an ISP uses data blocking to make people pay an increased subscription fee to be able to get to certain sites. (FCC).
             The FCC's 'Open Internet Order': The Open Internet Order was created with the sole purpose of stopping ISP's from altering the bandwidth of the Web. It was intended to guarantee the level playing field we know to be net neutrality. The January '14 court date revealed the FCC used a questionable framework while creating the Open Internet Order and subsequently lost the ability to ensure the rules are followed. ISP's are not limited by the old net neutrality rules anymore. Now they are capable of choosing to block certain websites and/or apps. In fact, here at Saint Francis University this semester, there were two nights in a row that Comcast and the Internet were not available for hours on end. I had spoken to our IT Systems Administrator and found out there was a scheduled 30 minute downtime during the first night. Instead of 30 minutes, the "routine system update" took over four hours and repeated the process the following night. (FCC).
             Net Neutrality Fosters Creativity.
             Since the inception of the Internet, it has expanded at a remarkable rate. The internet as we know it today got its start in the beginning of the 90's. A significant chunk of this growth is due to the abilities and freedoms that come with net neutrality. Thanks to net neutrality, revolutionary businesses such as Google or YouTube were possible to be made. Before January, when net neutrality still existed, individual entrepreneurs and SMBs were able to create online businesses for cheap.
