Fear Manipulations in Literature

But exactly how is the readers' fear being manipulated by literary elements in the genres of horror and thrillers? .
             The conflicted relationship between the protagonists and their goals is established through a development of fear that evokes the readers' anticipation about the outcome of the works. The readers' fear also intertwined with their hope and anxiety: the two emotions that aroused in the anticipation of what's coming next in the novel. With this in mind, the build of these elements are perfectly illustrated through the two famous works: Perfume: The Story of a Murder by Patrick Suskind and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Both Suskind and Stoker employ various literary devices and techniques in order to execute the elements of these two genres. The element of the characteristics of magical realism along with the supernatural ability of the two protagonists, Jean Grenouille and Dracula develop themselves an enigmatic sense of power. Both authors also express one of the most important factors that exist in the genres of horror and thrillers; the protagonists are anti-heroes. Moreover, the difference between the authors' choice of diction used to portray their protagonists' characteristics in the two works also contributes to the development of the story. The diction evokes the murderers' desire and is also used as a tool to reflect the other characters' perspectives upon the monstrous side of each protagonist. .
             With regard to this exploration, it is both important and interesting to examine the depth of Bram Stoker and Patrick Suskind's use of literary elements to produce such magnificent works of the two genres that have stood proudly in the world of literature. The exploration into the techniques used in developing the readers' fear in the two novels serves as a guide that dwells into the understanding of the fame of these two genres. Readers are all aware of how frightening, exciting thriller and horror novels are.
