Korean American Artist - Nam June Paik

However the characteristic of his work that makes his work Neo-Dadaism the most is the fact that his work is trying to redefine the relationship between the audience and the artist. Nam Jun's art tells you that art is not something that is owned by any specific social class or a self-praise of an arrogant artist but is for everyone and anyone can enjoy it and, further more, the audience can actually get involved with the art work and be the main agent who has the authority over it. For example, he had an installation of numbers of record players and put records plates next to it so that the audience can play any records that they want. Art to Nam June Paik was a fun festival that you interact with the audience.
In the 1960s, when Nam June Paik had started to establish his own art world into a specific genre which is named Video art, the television finally has become commonplace in homes, works and educational institutions, especially as a means for advertising, entertainment and news. When the television became available for everyone, it played absolutely tremendous role to create Mass Culture since the television was the main source of molding public opinion and Nam June was the one who used the television as the medium of art. Along with the dissemination of television, Nam June Paik invented ˜Participation TV'; the television screen changes as the audience speaks or puts a magnet on it and it means that the audience can change what appears on the screen however they want it to be. This piece of artwork is interpreted as Nam June's criticism on the social phenomenon that people are lacking communication due to the one-way information delivery system of the media such as the television and radio that are the symbol of the mass media and the major methods of journalism. Therefore he started his protest against the lack of communication from controlling the one-way system of television and you can see the expansion of this idea in his work called ˜TV garden'; Television (media) also needs organic communication as well as Humans.
