Common Sense - The Influence of Thomas Paine

Even if the people were to choose to have a King that does not mean the King's child will be a future ruler. Hereditary succession had brought an uncountable amount of evils. These evils range from things such as kings to corruption to civil war.
Paine begins to discuss the details of the American situation, responding to the idea that America has flourished under British rule. They fail to realize the America has evolved and does not need Britain's help. People argue that Britain has protected American, but Paine says that Britain only watched over America's economic state. Instead of watching over the colonies, the British have been attacking them and do not deserve America's loyalty. Paine says that the colonies have little to gain from remaining attached to Britain. Commerce can be better conducted with the rest of Europe after America become independent. Paine also thinks that if the colonies remain attached to Britain, there will be reoccurring problems that took place in the past. Paine fights that it would be best to get independence now before more problems come up. Paine suggests a form of government that the colonies should form. He suggests a representative democracy that gives equal rights to the colonies.
Paine explains why the current time is a good time to break free of Britain. Paine focuses on the current size of the colonies, and on their capabilities. Paine prepares an inventory of the British Navy and comes up with calculations showing how America can build a navy of similar size. Paine presents this as a way of guaranteeing America's security and growth in trade. Paine also states that America is sufficiently small as to be united now. Time would pass, and the colonies would grow, and the unity would not be the same. Paine says that as a colony of Britain, America lacks respectability on the international scene. America is seen as rebels and can't form alliances with other nations.
