Abortion and the Value of Life

Ever since the beginning of mankind, people have debated over ideologies and beliefs about certain subjects. The debate over abortion is one that has been raging on fiercely and relatively recently. For decades, people have been fighting to establish the laws that govern the rules of having an abortion. The debate over abortion has two sides. While the pro-life side of the argument emphasizes on the value of life, and the right of a baby to be born, the pro-choice argument focuses more on the right of a woman to decide for herself what to do with her baby. Both groups offer valid reasoning and feasible arguments in support of their side. Because people over the world grow up in different backgrounds with differing set of beliefs and morals, it is difficult to say definitively that one party is more correct. Two articles online, in particular, are able to illustrate the merits that are present in each side of the argument quite accurately. In CNN's Story Highlight, "Why Progressives Should Oppose Abortion ", Christopher Hale, in response to the 41st annual "March for Life " event, speaks in support of the pro-life party. Hanna Rosin's editorial, "Abortion is Great ", however, makes a declaration of abortion being a social good, and urges people to start embracing the usefulness of abortion. (Strong supportive Introduction).
Written in acknowledgement of the on-going annual march in support of unborn babies' lives, Christopher Hale's "Why Progressives Should Oppose Abortion " is an article that offers many understandable reasons for one to be on the pro-life side of the debate. Hale's first argument is made in the idea that the fundamental duty of a society is to protect the lives of all those who are a part of the community. He argues that a fetus, even though unborn, is a human being nevertheless, with a specific gender, facial features, and fingerprints, and therefore should be protected by society and its laws and rights.
