Brief Overview of World Religions

.
             Primal Religion.
My definition of Primal religion is that, it's a religion practiced by an indigenous people or culture. Primal religions generally do not depend on moral codes written in books or scriptures but pass down verbal knowledge from generation to generation through stories and song or dance and specific rites of passage. Primal religions existed before the invention of writing, and in this case literacy was unknown to the primal religion. We know very little about their ritual practices because they did not write things down. Primal people generally live in harmony with the world around them and hold each form of life in deep regard. A second distinguishing feature of primal religion is its embeddedness in place. Place is not space. Whereas space is abstract, place is concrete (Huston Smith, pg.370). No historical religion, not even Judaism and Shinto, is embedded in place to the extent that tribal religions are. The exact and rightful place is a feature of sanctity. And a third feature of primal religion is Eternal time. For primal people, "past" means preeminently closer to the originating source of things. Closer to the source means to be in some sense better. Time is not linear as western cultures think of it and instead the idea of "timelessness" is accepted. Rituals are enacted as performances of the original act and are ever present and thus link individuals to the eternity through the present.
             Confucianism.
Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who developed and taught a set of core values and beliefs which were ethical and philosophical known as Confucianism. Confucianism is based entirely on kindness, mutual respect, and an appreciation for character virtues. It is founded on the belief that society can flourish only when people learn to interact positively with each other. The foundation of Confucianism is an appreciation for one's character, and the well-being of others.
