Ethical Responsibility and Economic Development

"Know your enemy, know yourself, and your victory will not be threatened. Know the terrain, know the weather and your victory will be complete. This quote by the famous philosopher Sun Tze sums up the dilemma of addressing ethical responsibility and economic development. As an International Psychologist (IP) hired by Noca Cola, an initial responsibility would be to thoroughly research the culture and values of Columbia and trying to equate those with the culture and vision of the Noca Cola organization. .
The development of a strategic plan for Noca Cola would initially entail principles from the International Labor Organization (ILO) with the inclusion of the ideals from the Universal Declaration of Ethics. The first principle of the Declaration of Ethics addresses the respect for the dignity of persons. This ethical principle crosses geographical and cultural boundaries and recognizes the importance of inherent worth of all human beings regardless of ethnic origin or social status (www.un.org, n.d.). The main concern of Noca Cola is addressing the concerns of the indigenous working population employed in the plant and the location of the company being on indigenous land. .
According to the ILO (2003) the concept of land is very sacred to indigenous peoples as they have worked and lived there for several generations. "Thus loss of ancestral lands threatens their very survival as a community and a people" (p. 29). A meeting with the IP and the CEO and other administrative heads of Noca Cola would take place where they would be informed of these recommendations based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ILO. During this meeting it would be stated that in adherence to the Universal Declaration, it is important to address the fact that the continuity of peoples and cultures over time connects the peoples of today with the peoples past generations and the need to nurture future generations.
