Sectionalism and a Divided America

The issue of sectionalism divided our country and was a major reason behind the start of the Civil War. The interests of the North and South were quite different on the issue of slavery, and this is what divided the two. The North was more industrialized, business and industry played major roles within the north having no need for slaves while in the South was primarily based on agriculture. The way they survived was based on the work of slaves, and they had the need for them to keep their economy alive. The main reasoning for the split was when these thoughts of the banning of slavery became a reality, Vermont banned slavery in 1777, then in 1780 Pennsylvania freed all children born enslaved who reached the age of 28. Northerners didn't exactly care about slavery, but when it came to the spread of slavery westward thats where the problems came in. .
In the range of the time period of 1776 into the 1880's many laws were passed that angered Southerners, and was passed without the south in mind. The Tariff of 1789 was passed which angered the southerners because the importers had to pay a percentage of the value of their cargo when landed in the United States which mostly affected the Southerners and had no effect on the North. Also, the Three-Fifths compromise gave some rights to the slaves, which angered southerners due to the fact they didn't see these slaves as people. Another thing which didn't swing in the direction of the southerners which did not affect the north was the creation of the bank by Alexander Hamilton, they felt that the tariffs were burdensome to their businesses and another indication that states were losing their rights to the federal government. Many "improvements" the government thought would be good for the whole nation always swung to the side of the North. .
As time rolled on, it did not get better for the South, the Embargo of 1807 halted all trade between the United States and Europe, the south and west saw the demand for their crops plummet rapidly.
