Away From Her - Movie Analysis

Confronted with Alzheimer's disease, Grant and Fiona experience contrasting emotions as the film progresses, which is symbolized by the kitchen, nature, and the nursing home. The kitchen in the couple's cottage home symbolizes an intimate place for the two of them; they are often gathered there after ski trips and show a high level of comfort around each other. Grant and Fiona have been married for 44 years and it is starting to become a problem when Fiona begins to acknowledge her Alzheimer's disease. Even at an old age the two are able to joke around and maintain the sense of humor they had when they were first in-love with each other. The kitchen makes its first appearance as the two are cooking up some supper, and after that, as Grant is rinsing the dishes while Fiona is in charge of putting them away, her first attempt at returning the pots back to the right drawer is correct, while her choice of spot for the pan was a bit off- into the freezer (2:33) Now, looking at their facial expressions, it is evident that Grant doesn't want to confront the misplacement and simply smiles at Fiona. Fiona, on the other hand smiles but turns into a straight face – as if she knew she did something wrong, but couldn't pinpoint her exact mistake. This is the starting point of Fiona's realization of her Alzheimer's disease. Throughout the first bit of the film, we can see that Fiona is beginning to forget not only where the pots and pans go, but she is slowly forgetting how to read, and certain places that hold certain functions (i.e. she recognizes that the method to return a piece of mail is to mail it to the address, but she does not know where to go to mail it.) Her uses of sticky notes in the kitchen represent her attempt to hold onto the memories that lie between the two in their most intimate spot. .
The nature components of this film are very powerful because of the use of a wide variety of flowers; the way it is laid out and definitely because of how it represents the emotional bonds between Grant and Fiona.
