Corporal Punishment Alternative



             There are several alternative to corporal punishment. All methods of increasing behavior and decreasing behavior will work if the correct steps are used. .
             Start by changing the behavior of the child. To use the behavior change process, a target behavior must first be selected. The target behavior is the behavior that must be changed or modifies. A target behavior may be a behavior that already exists that needs to be increased or decreased. It may be a behavior that needs to be developed. Next, you must collect and record baseline data before any intervention is taken. If the behavior is not reinforced, the behavior probably will not change. Remember, you need to find what is reinforcing for the child, not something you think should be a reinforcer. You will compare this data with the baseline data to see if changes are being made due to the intervention. Lastly, evaluate the effects of intervention.              Good behavior can be increased by using methods of increasing behavior. These methods include positive reinforcing, shaping, contingency contracting, and token economy.
             The first method called positive reinforcing can be used to help increase a good behavior. Positive reinforcement must be used correctly and steps should be followed. The first step is to select a target behavior. Second, observe the child's behavior to see when he or she does the behavior. Third, reinforce that behavior immediately. Fourth, specify to the child what behavior is being reinforced by saying something like "I like the way you are sitting in your seat?" Fifth, be enthusiastic when reinforcing, show interest in the child's behavior.
