The Rutgers University Sober Program

There will be events every weekend. Events include trips to Six Flags Great Adventure, Gamarese farms in East Brunswick for hayrides, pumpkin picking, corn mazes, and apple picking, Menlo Park Mall, Adventure Aquarium in Camden, and New York City. Events like pool parties, dances, dinners, and movie nights will also be held within Rutgers University. These events will keep students occupied and will encourage healthy social behavior. Students drink for many reasons, however many students drink just because they are bored. According to Ukwayi, "6.7% of the respondents had no reason of consuming alcohol" (Ukwayi 416). This proves that by providing something for students to do that they enjoy, students will no longer be bored, participate in the provided activities, and not be enticed to drink alcohol. There are two models of success that prove that the RU Sober Program will be successful at Rutgers University and they are Project Graduation and RUPA, Rutgers University Programming Association. Project Graduation is an all-night, alcohol and drug-free party for seniors graduating from high school. Project Graduation has proved to be so effective that high schools all around the United States of America have partaken in the initiative. Samuels reports that, "Schools commonly see 85 percent to 90 percent participation rates. This year, about 20,000 seniors are expected to take part" (Samuels). These students are not forced to attend this program, but they choose to anyways proving that students do not need alcohol to have fun. RUPA is a university-wide program that provides a variety of events for the Rutgers Community. Although the purpose of RUPA is not alcohol prevention and giving students' clean non-alcoholic fun, the resulting outcome makes them less inclined to go out and party. RUPA demonstrates how successful this mentality is because it is proof in its own school that it works.
