Mathilde Loisel in The Necklace

She didn't want to meet her friend "whom she did not like to go and see any more, because she suffered so much when she came back" because of her jealousy how rich her friend was. She was always unhappy as if "she had fallen from her proper station" (345). Moreover, the idea of her putting material possessions over anything else is showed more clearly when the husband got the invitation to the ball and Mathilde started to force her husband to buy her clothes and jewelry for the ball. When she said she had no dress her husband gave her "four hundred francs. And try to have a pretty dress." Got the dress, she wanted more, a piece of jewelry so that she can look rich, if not she will feel "humiliating to look poor among other women who are rich." If she didn't have what she had asked for she will start "murmuring", had "an irritated glance" so that her husband granted her wish. Moreover, she always act weak like a real rich lady, just "sat waiting on the chair in her ball dress," let her husband ran around in the middle of the night to find the necklace.
After losing the diamond necklace, Madam Mathilde became stronger, prouder and happier. Finding a replacement for the lost necklace is hard, working to pay all the debt was even harder for Mathilde's family. They even have to "dismissed their servants" who took care of all the house work and they also have to "changed their lodgings" which they own into a rented "garret under the roof" (456). The worst thing that Mathilde had to suffer after her lost is "came to know what heavy housework meant and the odious cares of the kitchen". For a women like madam Mathilde, hadn't ever been working except for sitting at one place and dreaming about her luxury life, something had changed significantly in her life. After ten long years, she and her family had finally paid all their debt.
