The Necklace

Every person has a life that they would love, and every person would have a life that they would hate. The short story "The Necklace", by Guy de Maupassant shows how the main character Mathilde wants to live the rich life. However, by the end of the story Mathilde is stuck with a life that she hated. By writing this story the narrator proves his point that everyone become what they hate the most if you don't appreciate what you have.
The story begins with a description of what Mme. Loisel's (Mathilde) wants the most. She feels that she is made for a lifestyle of being rich, envied, charming, and sought after. However, fate has given her none of this. In the story Mathilde's life is like someone of a middle class person in today's world. Mathilde didn't have to work because her husband made enough money for them to live decently. He even made enough money for Mathilde to have a peasant do all the housework. This still wasn't enough for Mathilde. Guy de Maupassant in "The Necklace" writes: She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicaciesand all the luxeries. She suffered from the poverty of her dwelling, from the wretched look of the walls, from the worn-out chairs, from the ugliness of teh curtains. All those things, of which another woman of her rank would never even have been conscious, tortured her and made her angry(178). Mathilde's husband M. Loisel doesn't realize that she feels this way and gets her an invitation to one of the most prestigious balls in in which, the whole official world will be in attendance. This angers Mathile on the basis that she feels that she will look poor in all the dresses that she owns. She says to give the ticket away because she won't go. Her husband comes to the rescue and gives her money to buy a new dress. The gesture wasn't enough to make Mathilde smile because she still wanted jewlery to go with the dress. M. Loisel points out to Mme.
