Caffeine and the Ability to Sleep


            Many people use caffeine to keep themselves awake and energized during the day. Coffee and energy drinks are commonly consumed source of caffeine; and therefore whether caffeine actually affects the ability to sleep or not is the topic of this experiment. According to the Dr. Carol Ash, who did medicine research for 15 years, caffeine blocks the sleep induction of our body and increases the level of adrenalin; therefore, based on the current knowledge, the hypothesis is that caffeine is thought to affect people from falling asleep at night. Also, caffeine is predicted to affect people from having a deep sleep. .
             To design an experiment to test the effect of caffeine consumption and sleep, a test should be carried out with considerable amount of participants. 20 people would be selected randomly that are in similar age group, and will be allotted to two different groups-experimental group and control group. For the experimental group, 300mg of caffeine will be given to the participants, and for the control group none of caffeine related products will be provided or allowed to consume during the experiment. For both groups, the duration of time that participants required to fall into the sleep and the total amount of sleep will be collected. The independent variable would be the amount of caffeine that is given to the experimental group. The dependent variable would be the duration of time people fall into sleep or total amount of time participant could sleep after consuming caffeine. In order to make sure that other variables were not interfering with the experiment, participants would be strictly prohibited from consuming any other source of caffeine or medicine that could increase or decrease the effect of the caffeine given during the experiment. The data collected will be the duration of time participant needed to fall into asleep; and total amount of time participant could sleep.
