The Struggles of Technology

Why read the full article when there is a summary somewhere else that requires even less time? In "Is Google Making Us Stupid" by Nicholas Carr, he goes into depth about this; "Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski" (377). It's all too easy for people now to get around hard work. The task at hand may get done but the way that people go about completing the task is the real issue. What does it say about society when people are skipping over all of the hard steps and jumping straight to the finish line? "It could be that the real debate will not be books versus the internet but how to build an internet counterculture that will better attract people to serious learning"(Brooks 389). While our technology has changed so have the mindsets of people. .
             If the world keeps on track with this "easy way" of thinking then eventually all society will be left with is simple-minded people. Imagine the world being controlled by people who want to skip right to the point and forget all the minute details. Logic will lack its substance and everything will become a general summary. The Internet does the work for people and that's one of the biggest issues. I was raised to do things for myself and not to take the easier way because all the hard work would pay off. When that hard work paid off a sense of satisfaction was gained, and that satisfaction gave a sense of control. People are now confusing that satisfaction with Google doing their work for them. They feel as if they are gaining power and control but in reality they are losing because they aren't thinking for themselves and expanding their thoughts. But if we pause-even briefly-between searches to consider how we no longer control our own personal information, we may feel distinctly disempowered-and that realization can be destabilizing(Aboujaoude 400).
