Vitamin D and Breast Cancer

To completely comprehend the relationship between the two, Compos et al. studied the differences between the transcriptional impacts of 1α, 25 di-hydroxyvitamin D3 on breast carcinoma fibroblasts and normal breast tissue fibroblasts. Compos et al. acquired breast tissue samples from 5 postmenopausal patients between the ages of 42 and 64 years old. These 5 patients were diagnosed with primary ductal invasive breast cancer, which is the most common type resulting in 80% of all breast cancer cases. Ductal invasive breast cancer refers to cancer that originated in the milk ducks and has spread to/invaded the surrounding breast tissues (American Cancer Society, 2014). Two types of fibroblasts associated with the human breasts were then obtained from previously acquired tissue samples.
