The Hobbit Essay

Tolkien, The Hobbit, Bilbo transforms from a homely non-adventurous hobbit to a great friend to many Middle Earth races and burglar. The dwarves were very doubtful of Bilbo's said abilities in the beginning, and were forever in thanks to Bilbo for his great wit and abilities. By the eighth chapter, "Flies and Spiders", Bilbo discovers his strength and bravery. These newly found traits were displayed when the dwarves were lost and captured by giant spiders. Bilbo slipped on his magic ring and killed a few spiders. While he was invisible he distracted the spiders and lured them away from the group and went back to get the dwarves. He named his sword the "Sting" in this chapter because of the feeling he got when he killed a spider. "He beat the creature off with his hands-it was trying to poison him to keep him quiet, as small spiders do to flies-until he remembered his sword ad drew it out. Then the spider jumped back, and he had time to cut his feet loose. After that, it was his turn to attack. The spider evidently was not used to things that carried such stings at their sides" (pg. 155). Bilbo found his strength and courage and the dwarves were in his debt. The dwarves will continue to use Bilbo and remain indebted to him.
In chapter eleven, "On the Doorstep", Bilbo figures out the riddle on the map and gets the gate to the lonely mountain to open. Bilbo uses his wit and connection making abilities to find the answer he is looking for. Thorin nominated Balin, Fili, and Kili to search for the main entrance on the south side of the mountain with Bilbo. After hours of searching, he finds it. The main entrance was in a narrow passage of the mountain, but the door would not budge. After attempting to open the door for a whole day, the crew moved the camp closer to the newly found entrance. Meanwhile Bilbo was left in thought of how to get the door open and an "enormous" thrush was bothering him.
