Influences of the Persian Empire



             When Cyrus died his death was mourned and many feared the Empire would fall until Darius I rose to power. He added greatness to things that Cyrus had achieved. Darius split the Empire into numerous states, allowing for easier control. Darius selected a satrap, governor type representative, to perform his laws in each state and collect empire taxes. (Fried, 108) Darius also began the use of a royal road that enabled messengers, soldiers, and goods to move rapidly across the land. The Persian Empire lasted a long time due to the hard work of Darius I. .
             The Persian Empire brought huge importance to the region and the people living there. Cyrus ruled the nation with much tolerance, for illustration after the Fertile Crescent lands were token over, Cyrus freed all Hebrew people from Babylonian rule declaring rights for all. This, along with his tolerance for religious freedom brought much support for him by many individuals. Cyrus's view on having tolerance allowed for a peaceful empire which made it easier to rule the masses. Darius's influence was also valued; when he split the empire into separate states governed by satraps, he was able to better control and see over the vast empire. (Fried, 45) Taxes were easily gathered, the road made it easier to communicate, and trade was much easier. The Persian Empire was built on a foundation tolerance; it had strong military force, wise leaders, and effective rule. Not only did this empire greatly influence the lives of those living with in it, but it influenced the world. .
             The Persian Empire is recognized as a nation that had the first postal service. In the United States the phrase; "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" is commonly used for the countries postal service, but it was originally used to describe the Persian Empire's postal service.
