Charity and the Ice Bucket Challenge

Last summer, one thrilling game quickly spread and became the talk of the social internet-ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Many celebrities from different walks of life participated in the game and made it even more fashionable among the people. However, as the weather gets colder and colder, and the enthusiasm of the people waned, ALS Ice Bucket challenge gradually faded out of sight. This has caused many criticisms. Even when it was raging the social media like a raging fire, many critical voices can be heard. It was criticized to be a publicity stunt. Animal right activists refused to participate because the ALS researches are cruelly hurting numerous animals. Some even argued that this game is wasting water resource and aggravating the drought in California. However, despite all the criticism that seems to be very rational, I appreciate this practice. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge should be encouraged rather than discouraged, because imperfect action is much more preferable to inaction. On a micro level, by participating, more people got to know about ALS, and more donation was raised. On a macro level, it is an enrichment of charity culture and spreads the charitable concept to all over the world. .
Only after you know something about a vulnerable group can you start to care about them and help them. From this perspective, Ice Bucket Challenge should be recognized because at least this game successfully got many people to know more about ALS. ALS sufferers are indeed an unnoticed group before Ice Bucket Challenge became popular in FaceBook and Twitter. ALS is short for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which is "a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord" (ALS Association). Patients who have ALS suffer from the lost of movement ability and eventually die of respiratory failure. It is still incurable so far, and that's why they need to raise more donates for the researches.
