Married Couple Interview Project

Many situations and lifestyle choices make for different types of marriages. Marriage is a constantly evolving institution. In our lifetime, society has evolved from what used to be considered "traditional" marriage, into accepting that love can and does exist outside of heterosexual coupling. Marriage now has a broader definition to include same-sex couples. On October 4, 2014, I had the privilege of interviewing Jessica and Sandy. They have been together for 22 years, 20 of those years married. Jessica is currently working at a cable providing company, in addition to being a nursing student. Sandy is a guidance counselor at a middle school. Both women are in their 40s. They are a childless couple. The interview included questions about how they met, their challenges, family interactions, boundaries, marital maintenance, couple rituals, sexual communication, and intimacy expressions they have developed in their relationship as they successfully navigate through life together. .
Jessica and Sandy met in 1992. Jessie was working as a disk jockey/ karaoke host during an event at Rocky Point Park, and Sandy had gone to be trained by her. As they recounted how they met and became a couple, there was warmness between them. They are very much at ease with each other, co-constructing their story. This is a pattern that continued throughout the interview. They recall a bond right from the start, and describe an instant connection. Jessie is much taller than Sandy, and recalls picking her up and twirling her around. It is a joke between them that Jessie "showed her the equipment," on their first encounter. Their story displays narrative fidelity, fitting with their personalities. They are both easy-going and utilize humor between themselves, and with others. What makes their story different from most creation stories is that in 1992, Jessica was John. .
The biggest challenge this couple has faced is when Jessica came out to her wife as a woman.
