Nature, Nurture, and Gender Expectations

For instance, many doctors are in the profession only because their parents forced it upon them throughout their lifetime, or because they are looked upon as higher in the social aspect. It can ruin who a person is just because they followed someone else's guidelines and in the long run can be detrimental as in ruining a person's life when a person is being forced into something they did not choose. Also, an environment full of friends who do not support a person's goals and what they want to do can create damage to their identity and just because of someone else they do not reach their full potential in being who they want to be. "Environmental factors can push toward differentiation" (Plomin 112). Plomin explains that parental teachings and experience is what leads to kids being different from one another. .
Gender is associated with nurture because once a child is born either male or female, gender roles and expectations can change who a person is. Jayme Poisson, author of "Parents Keep Child Gender Secret," describes how both parents of the child, Storm, are raising their child without a gender so Storm is not brought up with expectations and stereotypes. Storm is being raised by nurture because when Storm gets older, all the knowledge he has will be created from experience and how he wants his gender to be, not on how others force it upon him. Poisson states, "It only worked up to a certain extent. Some girls never played with the trucks. Some boys weren't interested in ballet. It was a humbling experiment for us because we learned we don't have the control that we thought we did" (Poisson 369). This quote explains that using nurture by the influence of gender roles relate to Storm being able to choose his gender. Storm's parents are using nurture to raise their child without a gender. Now when Storm grows up he can choose which direction and what path he would like to take.
