An Overview of Homeland Security


            
             Has the United States become a safer country now then it was 10 years ago? A lot of experts have questioned this many times. After the traumatic event of the attacks on The World Trade Center, the United States has taken major steps in protecting this country so an event like this will not happen again in the future. Although there has always been some type of security all around, these measures have been taken to the next step. With the safety measures that have been provided to the people before, there are a lot more new technologies and improvements that have occurred to make this a safer place. .
             An Overview of Homeland Security Function.
             After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, people in the United States knew that absolutely anything could happen without even thinking about it. This event made the government realize that the United States security was not the best it could be. There always has been security everywhere, but today everything is taken to another level and is being controlled with a great amount of precautions. Now there is a lot more airport security, which will help prevent any more hijacking of planes or bombings. There has also been a lot more security in New York City because of the terrorist attack. There are also new technologies and programs that help with the security of this country. .
             After the attack in 2001, the United States government created the Department of Homeland Security, giving it a lot more power to pursue and restrain terrorism suspects. This department has some 200,000 or more people in two-dozen separate agencies working to make this a safe homeland. With the creation of this department, there has been a lot more security everywhere, and that has been a lot tougher. There are many agencies that were in different departments that are now in the Department of Homeland Security, some of them being the Nuclear Incident Response team, Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration, amongst many more (Katel, 2009).
