Language and Motor Development

Many do not understand the importance of motor and language development because they aren't aware of the huge role it plays in an individuals' development. Have you ever wondered why kids with dyslexia and autism can't communicate as well as other children? Well it's because of delayed or little motor development. Motor development is when a child goes through his or her early developmental milestones' which involves talking such as first words, walking, balance, fine posture, awareness of their surroundings and etc. Language development is when infants and children learn words and are able to either speak or write it and it develops as they grow. Motor and Language development is related because if a child delays in motor development their language development delays as well placing them at a disadvantage. This topic is important because we see how motor and language development correlates with each other through different research studies which determines the importance of gaining motor skills which helps the development of language.
The first research study related to language and motor development is Early motor development and later language and reading skills in children at risk of familial dyslexia. This study is from the journal of Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology 2006.This research was conducted in 2005 by Helena Viholainen, Timo Ahonen, Paula Lyytinen, Marja Cantell, and Asko Tolvanen Heikki Lyytinen. Dyslexia is a disorder where someone is unable to read even though they are normal with no psychological disorders and it can be caused genetically and environmentally. By analyzing this study we will have a better understanding of the relationship between motor and language development and how dyslexia may correlates with them. There were 2 main questions asked at the beginning of this study. First question asked was if the late development of motor development was connected to language development leading to determine the reading age and children's reading skills.
