             The issue of foreign dominance took different forms than in Vietnam.9 Conflict between Vietnam and Cambodia had some great power overtones. After the Khmer Rouge took power, they looked to China for protection from the Vietnamese. An estimate of 60,000 North Vietnam and Viet Cong troops were stationed in Cambodia at the time of the second Vietnam cease-fire of January 27, 1973, supporting 25,000 to 30.000 Khmer Rouge insurgents. Most withdrew from Cambodia in the early 1973.10 A series of violent fights transpired between Cambodian and Vietnamese Communist forces during 1974.11 The top two countries that had the most influence over Cambodia and Laos are The United States and the Vietnam. .
             The leadership in Cambodia and Laos are both communist but have different leaders. Cambodia's head of the state was Prince Norodom Sihanouk.12 When Pol Pot was a young boy studying in Paris Cambodia was under French Control. While in Paris he was influenced by communism. When he returned to Cambodia he wanted to set-up a communist peasant farming state. The United States who was in a war with North Vietnam started bombing North Cambodia to get the North Vietnam soldiers that were regrouping and resupplying there. The United States supported a military coup in Cambodia that eventually ousted Prince Norodom Sihanouk and Pol Pot took over. Pol Pot was influenced by China's great leap forward.
