Impact of Refrigeration

According to the author's inferences, there is a large social impact evident throughout the excerpt. The quote, "refrigeration brought distant production centers and the North American population together" is one of the few examples which exemplify the significance of this element of social impact. Another example that touches on the element of social impact is seen through the quote, "The household refrigerator changed the way people ate and socially affected the household". It is implied that the society experienced comfort with the development of refrigerators because people did not have to depend on external sources of ice delivery such as iceboxes for preserving their food and keeping it cool. The author expresses that refrigeration brought a great deal of comfort to the lives of both the rural and urban population.
The element of discontinuity is brought in through the quotes, "ice wagons became a thing of the past" and "and they didn't have to make provisions for it like leaving a key or leaving the door open". Discontinuity is represented by the transition from the ice wagons to the refrigerator. There is a big jump observed in the technology with the introduction of refrigerators. In the past, ice wagons (which were the mode of door to door ice delivery) were more common, but since 1921, refrigerators have become an essential part of kitchen appliances for the purpose of food storage and preservation. Ice wagons made a more passive usage of technology whereas refrigerators are more active in their use of technology. Refrigerators are also more efficient since they lose heat to the surroundings in order to maintain a cool environment inside, as opposed to storing ice in ice boxes with the intent of providing the same cooling effect.
Novelty, though not described explicitly, can be inferred through the references about refrigeration offering ways to "preserve and cool food" and "it tore down the barriers of climates and seasons".
