Since the early Egyptian civilizations, makeup was always a "must" to seek the approval or to signify the power of the elite. Even though many people nowadays may not see wearing makeup the same as the past generations, the beliefs still prevail in some sort of level. In the 21st century, women are almost required to wear makeup to even be decently presentable, either to impress someone by covering up flaws, or just to satisfy one's self. Although many may argue that wearing makeup is solely a form of expression, society has a picture of perfection and anyone who does not look perfect is unacceptable. Women should not be imposed to wear makeup because it can be very costly, takes away worth from the idea of social equality, and there are actually many misconceptions that may even worsen flaws. .
For starters, buying makeup can be very costly, especially if the objective is getting quality makeup. In a makeup blog called "The Gloss", Rachel Segal wrote an article stating, "The report, Beauty at any Cost," by YWCA USA ",noted U.S. women spent some $7 billion a year, or an average of about $100 each, on cosmetics and beauty products.That $100 a month, if saved and invested for five years, would pay for a full year of tuition and fees at a public college." The money could be used for more necessary things, like education, charity, or feeding the homeless. However, many women rather spend it on makeup which can eventually ruin their appearance by worsening the facial flaws.
Further, society spreading the idea that women have to wear makeup takes value away from the claim to social equality. As stated before, many may argue that wearing makeup is a form of expression and self acceptance; however that proves the exact opposite. This is because they aren't accepting their natural beauty, but just covering their true selves with makeup. It is true that some women feel more confident wearing makeup, but it is still not helping the "love yourself" situation , flaws and all.
