"All animals are equal but some are more equal than others"(Orwell 134), is the theme of George Orwell's 'Animal Farm'. They went from overturning one powerful human leader to gaining a harsher animal leader who is respected and honored because of his species. The lives of the animals on the farm take a wild turn after the successful rebellion against the humans Throughout the novel Orwell uses ideas and characters to demonstrate that propaganda, hypocrisy, and pride can trigger totalitarian control in a community.
Throughout Animal Farm propaganda was used by the pigs to gain support and control over the farm and the animals. Old Major uses multiple types of propaganda to persuade the animals to think about the possibility of rebelling against the farmers. He influences the animals to believe that all animals are friends and all humans are enemies by using difficult arguments that the other animals couldn't comprehend, so they had to agree. Once the pigs gain control, they use their intelligence to their advantage by making the animals believe in the laws of Animalism to insure they are never enslaved by humans again. The persuasive pig, Squealer, uses several techniques to influence the other animals that the pigs will receive extra food, better beds, and leadership roles. The pigs are able to use propaganda so effectively because they are more intelligent and want to be leaders on the farm. Napoleon becomes the sole leader after chasing away his competition, Snowball, with his fierce attack dogs, but the questions of what happened are resolved once Snowball is accused of being a traitor and criminal. Now as the farm is flowing along well, but whenever something goes wrong Snowball, who has become a scapegoat, is to blame. The pigs use false information or propaganda to get the animals to work harder. When boxer 'dies' the pigs want the other animals to follow Boxers two, propaganda slogans," always work harder," and "Napoleon is always right".
