Tragic Heroes in Literature

" The manatees section of the zoo is where animals routinely got sent back to their habitat after they have received treatment (French 59). This shows that Lex really cares for these animals, helping the animals did not necessarily bring profit to the zoo , but his love for animals makes this possible. Lex shows a different side to his attitude when he saves Dr. Murphy, " Enshala was enragedshe was only a few feet from Murphy when Lex fired,"because he loves animals so much he could have weigh the option to wait a few minutes for Enshala to knock out even though Murphy would have been dead by then but instead,he saves Murphy.( 188) though he does not always exude compassion to his workers the fact that he chooses to save Murphy instead of the animal showsthat he does care. These heroic actions makes him a heroic figure to the public.While Faustus one of the smartest scientists of his time, uses his versed knowledge to help people and also entertain them with his magical skills, "know that your words have won me at lastto practice magic and concealed arts," Faustus is really obsessed with magic and his knowledge that people around him found it both disturbing and entertaining. (Marlowe 1.1 103)His heroic persona is more implied than shown because the people saw him as someone that is bound to be great because of his knowledge and skills.
             Excessive self love draws a thick veil between people and their faults. Like the two characters Lex and Faustus are, they are heroic figures to their audience but excessive pride and ego hinders them from achieving their goals to help people and animals. Instead of being look up to as heroes they become tragic heroes. Lex is a character that goes after his vision without slowing down or caring about how people feel about his approach he becomes known as the "the white devilaware of the nickname and did not let it trouble him," as a result of him constantly trying to inflict fear and supremacy in the hearts of his subordinates and co-workers; but he does not even care about the name, as far as they do as he says (29).
