Further, some individuals think that police brutality should be used to control the crimes and illegal acts, but I am totally against police brutality. Police brutality should be stopped, because it is considered as a crime, and it violates the trust and power given to an officer.
White Collar Crime.
First, police brutality is not only a simple crime; it is in fact a white collar crime. As a definition, a white collar crime is a criminal act "committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation" (Strader, 2002, p.1). This means that a white collar crime is when a person that has a known position of high status in society such as police man, commits a crime or an illegal act while accomplishing his job. Also, studies have shown that white collar crimes are not only committed by individuals of "high social status", but also by people of different backgrounds (Strader, 2002, p.1). This type of violation causes large financial losings to the federal, local, and state governments, private organizations, and individuals. There are three main key elements for a crime to be called a white collar crime. These key elements are the trust given to officers by the citizens, the respectability for the position officers hold, and their power. (Mangan, n.d., para.4, 16). And since police brutality violates these key elements, it is considered a white collar crime. Mangan, in his article, proves the previous point by saying "The use of excessive force is a criminal act, and it is in fact a type of white collar crime" (Mangan, n.d., para.2). Moreover, police use of excessive force is a direct abuse of the jurisprudence within the police force. .
