Many racial acts were done in the colonial era, which include slavery, settlements, Indian reservations, segregation, residential schools, and internment camps. The heaviest burdens of racism in the country have fallen on Native Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans, Latin Americans, and many other immigrant groups and their descendants. Though in the 60's the Civil Rights Act was approved, which made discrimination illegal. This law still did not stop people from treating minorities with cruelty, and hatred. When this law was passed not only did it affect African Americans but it shook the whole nation. I decided to ask a member of my neighborhood what his thoughts were on the Civil Rights movement and how his family took the news. He believed that the Civil Rights movement had an impact on the whole nation, and not only did it benefit Blacks, he thought that it opened up the eyes of many Caucasians (Hyer).
Nonetheless there are lots of White's that at that time hated what was happening to their country. They only saw Blacks and minorities as people that were not worthy of being in the same room getting treated as equals, and those feeling have been transferred from generation to generation. Bitter people who believed that the Civil Rights Act was a mistake have taught their sons and daughters to hate African Americans and anyone that does not look like them. Thus, what do we do when some of our peers have been brought up thinking that they are better than all other ethnicities? Well we try as hard as we can to make sure that they realize that everyone is equal and that everyone needs to be treated with respect.
Of course we are in Utah, were people have created their own little bubble. Here with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, people tend to be more accepting towards the differences each one of us have. But not everyone follows that, there are many that don't agree with what Obama has been doing in this country, they are not afraid to show that they do not like him as president and are taking their anger out on others who resemble Obama's appearance.
