The College Degree Divide

It is more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Education is one of the most important investments a country can make in its people and its future, and is critical to reducing poverty and inequality. Although, getting admitted into college is an added advantage, most students do not graduate because they end up dropping out. If all or most students in low-income or high-income earning countries graduated from community colleges, a large percentage of people will end up being poverty stricken. But due to financial problems and students having to take remedial classes, students tend to drop out of community college which often leads to unemployment and an increase in crime rate in the local community.
Remediation is one of the reasons people drop out of community college. Remedial education simply refers to classes taken in a community college that are below college-level. Students pay tuition and can use financial aid for remedial courses, but cannot receive college credit and cannot be transferred. Most remediation occurs in reading, writing and math. The term "remedial" often is used interchangeably with the terms "developmental" and "basic skills". Taking remedial classes are one of the major reasons students drop out of community college these days. According to the article, Dropouts Loom Large for Schools, the author, Mike Bowler says, "Studies show that remedial students are more likely to drop out". This proves and explains that remedial classes are major determinant to students withdrawing from school. As more students take those classes, the ratio of dropping out increases. This is due to the fact that taking these classes alone discourages and frustrates them. People can get frustrated because of the large amount of money spent for those classes and by the end of the day credit will not be given, this discourages the students from doing or performing well in classes, skipping and ignoring assignment which in the long run leads them to dropping out of the school completely.
