Public Trust and Ethical Issues in Law Enforcement

The video "Public Trust and Ethical Issues in Law Enforcement" mainly talked about the publics lack of trust in the police/criminal justice system, and also touched base on what the police are doing to try to improve that. I think that the main reason the public has so many trust issues in the police is because they think the police have all the power and can get away with anything. When in reality the police have many limitations in the way they carry out the law. .
As stated in the YouTube video law enforcement has certain protocols that they must follow when it comes to budget, training, and use of force. Higher hierchy's on the police force have to send in annual reports of all of their financial information: loans, stocks, income, properties, etc. They even have to report the financial information of anyone who lives in the same household. They make these reports of their finances and those of the police station so that their superiors can review them and make ensure that budget is being used appropriately. There has also been an increase in training. They are targeting for officers to be able to de-escalate situations vocally rather that having to resort to using force. Some departments have increased training time specialized for just that. .
According to some online articles the publics trust in police and the criminal justice system is currently at an all time low. Many people think this lack of trust has to do with the media and the way it portrays the news and the actions of police officers. The news works off of ratings, the more speculation, gossip, and rumors they report on law enforcement the more ratings they will bring in. Civilians aren't able to go up to officers and directly ask about case however they are able to tune in to the news. Right now the big thing police officers are being accused of are racial profiling. The media can turn the smallest situation into a scandal just by throwing the word "race" in their report.
