The Stages of Hinduism

Hinduism is a religion that originated in India, and is still practiced by most of its inhabitants. It is stated that Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and is confirmed as the official religion of the country. Hinduism is also practiced in other parts of the world including parts of Africa, Southeast Asia, the East Indies and England. Hinduism is not just a religion but a way of life. The religion has created a set of rules for good living on this earth. The Hindus define their community as those who believe in the Vedas or those who follow the way of the four stages of life. While reading about the religion Hinduism what really caught my attention was their four stages of life. When I think about the stages of life the first thing that comes to mind is infant, toddler, child, teenager, young adult, adult, elderly. But in the Hindu life stages there are only four stages of life which are student, householder, retirement, and sannyasin. This author intends on exploring the four stages of Hindu life. .
The first stage of Hindu life is known as the student. This stage began when the child starts school between the ages of eight and twelve. "This stage lasts for twelve years or until the child finish school." (Smith, 1991) The young boy leaves home to stay with a teacher or guru to attain life's responsibility by gaining practical and spiritual knowledge and to build character. The teacher prepares the child for his future profession such as a potter's apprentice. .
The second stage of Hindu life begins when the man gets married and has children with his wife which forms a family. The man at this stage takes on the responsibility of becoming the householder. As a householder, a man is expected to contribute to the good of society by holding a job and being active in the community. Along with his wife, a householder is expected to encourage the Hindu faith in his children and family.
