In this particular story the characters have an abusive way to interact with each other. The passage I chose was because it supports my theme since you can see that the couple has a dysfunctional type of communication because of the way they approach on another. Which as consequence leads into the destruction of their love and they both hurt each other. .
The second story I chose was What We Talk About When We Talk About Love where I will be focusing on character and language as well. It talks about four characters that are sitting around a kitchen table in the afternoon: Mel, which is a cardiologist; Terri, is his wife; Nick, the narrator of this story; and lastly Laura, Nick's wife. They are drinking gin and talking about love. Mel claim that true love is nothing less than spiritual love. He also emphasizes that love is a courageous nature of romance and devotion. But Terri reminds about her ex-husband that expresses his love in an abusive and possessive way, and maintains that his physical abuse was a sign of his love for her. As Terri states " He beat me up one night. He dragged me around the living room by my ankles. He kept saying I love you, I love you bitch My head kept on knocking on things" (138). This passage supports my theme because Teri and her ex-husband had a terrible dysfunctional communication. How or why would you drag your wife threw the floor and scream at her with offensive language that you love her? How does that make sense? Well to Terri at that time it did she mentions that it was his way of demonstrating his love for her. But that is what she wanted to see things like instead of actually talking to him and say that it is not the way demonstrate love. In contrast, Nick and Laura were in all that honeymoon stage, in which everything is all pink and nice. With this said, going back to the previous story where the couple were there was abusive interaction Terri believed the way her ex-husband showed his affection in a violent and possessive way.
