Government and the Food Industry

Food has become a politically controversial subject in America, and it's the simple fact that people do not know the right way to eat healthy because the government and food industries do not know the right way to eat healthy. This causes confusion, which makes it almost impossible for the people to actually figure out the right way to eat and stay healthy. In Balkos, Warners, and Maxfields articles, they describe the problems American people are facing with eating healthy and being overweight.
Balko is describing to the readers the effect the government is having on the people and how they should eat. The government is trying to control the peoples welfare and how they should worry about others health before their own. Since the government has been involved, it has caused people to judge others of their weight or what they are eating. Balko reflects this in his article by describing to the readers that they should be trying to take control of what they are eating and not let the government try and control it for them. "Instead of manipulating or intervening in the array of food options available to American consumers, our government ought to be working to foster a sense of responsibility in and and ownership of our own health and well being." (pg. 396) By telling the readers this, Balko shows them that they should take control of how they eat and leave it to the people to change their ways.
In America more than two thirds of adults are indeed fat (overweight or obese) and 17 percent of children and adolescents are obese. These stats come from Warners article, "Junking Junk Food", this article shows that people know how to eat healthy because we have done it in the past. The people just need to be reminded on how to do that, though it is hard for them because there are several factors that contribute to them not being able to, like emotional foods, which is ice cream, candy, cookies, etc "Because of the unique emotional power of food, it's hard, if not impossible, to similarly stigmatize unhealthful eating.
