Government Funding for Domestic Violence Victims

Domestic violence is a sobering issue. Approximately one out of every four women in the United States has experienced domestic violence by the hands of a current spouse, former spouse, or boyfriend (Black et al. 5). It has many names which include family violence, battering, wife beating, and domestic abuse. All these terms refer to the same thing, which is abuse by a marital, common law, or dating partner in an intimate relationship. It has a profound negative affect, both mentally and physically, on the abused. When domestic violence victims finally take the challenging step to reach out for help, many of them are in frightening situations. It is imperative that the victims find immediate safety and support, but many of them have no family or friends that they can turn to for assistance. Consequently, it is essential that additional government funds be budgeted for the upcoming fiscal years, so that domestic violence victims can receive adequate housing, counseling, and educational services. .
Since 1994, the government has provided support for these victims through various Violence Again Woman Act (VAWA) programs, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA), and the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). These programs have made significant advancement towards halting domestic violence (Truman 15). However, during the most recent years, substantial and devastating budget cuts have been made to government supported domestic violence programs. The victims of domestic violence are the ones that suffer severely from these budget restrictions, and they are often forced with no other choice than to return to their abuser. Since 2012, approximately 20 domestic violence programs across the United States have been forced to end their services (16). At the same time that budget cuts are being enacted, programs nationwide are acknowledging an increase in their demand for services. The need for services is large, and government funds need to allocated to meet the needs of domestic violence victims.
