The Strength of Having a Master's Degree

             Cite at least one example of when your leadership had an impact on or changed a certain situation, and justify how an IE Master's Degree program would help you to strengthen or improve this competence. Having just taken over a position as Senior Merchandiser in my organization – a family owned specialty luxury fashion business – I faced perhaps one of the more significant challenges that I have come across so far. Our ambitious expansion plan and increasing turnover resulted in a continuous roll out of stores, many of which were failing to meet their sales targets. We detected that the core problem lied in the planning process, as it was inflexible. This left the stores invariably overstocked or under stocked in key categories, which coupled by an unstable trading environment through a recession, forced us to re-visit the planning process.
             I felt a strong affinity towards the issue and persuaded management to give me the opportunity to lead the project. The objective was to build a scalable planning structure that could sustain our aggressive mid term growth strategy. I started off by assimilating information from management, the sales team, my buying team, suppliers and external sources regarding the set of problems we faced. The next step was to develop consensus and bring on board an external consultancy with deep planning expertise in our particular niche. However the consultancy's "one size fits all" solution did not suit the idiosyncrasies of our needs but their evaluation put me in a better position to ask critical questions of not only our planning model but the business in itself. Armed with defined questions and all the information necessary, I put together a framework with the help of my team and got the IT department to develop our indigenous system.
             The next step was to reorganize the department and put the process in play: I always knew that the success of the project was hinged on how I would distribute the responsibilities amongst my team.
