Roman and Chinese Warfare

When it comes to waging war and going into battle there are rules and preparation that must be adhered to. There are two great empires in history whose rules and preparation could not be more different. One of the only similarities of these Empires is the success they enjoyed in battle. Those Empires would be the Roman and the Chinese empires. With each victory and defeat comes a great amount of knowledge that each empire will pass down through the ages. Each empire will also have their own ideas on when is the correct timeframe to go to war. Although warfare appears to be very similar throughout time there will be noticeable differences in how these tow empires handled themselves in times of war.
War can be looked at as a family game night. In most games there is luck, skill, or strategy involved. If you plan to play another night the most important aspect is the knowledge you can take with you that will make you a formidable opponent. For the Roman Empire this knowledge was not given the respect it deserves. "Roman Commanders lacked any formal training in warfare and therefore some scholars refer to them as amateur generals."1 I doubt anyone could imagine General Eisenhower being able to effectively pull off the D-day invasion without the training of West Point. The only mention of warfare was through, "Discussions during dinners, feasts, and drinking parties."2 If these discussions are anything like today, I am sure that there is a large amount of exaggeration that goes on. The important details of each battle would be lost within a story that only partially tells the truth of what happened. Any written form of documentation came from "Poems and songs instilled a martial spirit and even taught tactical lessons."3 I find it hard to believe that you can run a military, let alone build an empire without a buildup of knowledge. It shows that the Roman Empire was built upon sheer brute force that would allow such job site training to take place.
