Union Strategic Military Planning

4 As the Union Army was trying to gain control over Fort Sumter, the first shots of the Civil War was fired. 5 .
The North held many advantages over the South during the Civil War. One of those advantages had to be the population. The North also had factories and industries that produced materials that were in need during the strike of war. Last but not least, the North had far better transportation network such as highways, canals, and railroads. The source of transportation helped the military forces to resupply in the fields. Not only was the Union forces had supplies, but also better army training.6 The South on the other hand, had fewer advantages. One of those few advantages the Confederates had was the pure fact of fighting on their home frontier. The South contained a military tradition that which had high encouragement for young me to serve in the armed forces or attend a military school; many had served the U.S. military before the Civil War.7 To add on another advantage to the South is the inclusion of great leadership of well known commanders named Robert E, Lee, Joseph Johnston, Stonewall Jackson. Although the Union had a population advantage, the South was not so lucky. The South was more worried about the mere fact of slave rebellion because the African-Americans wanted to be free, despite the interests of either sides. Once the Emancipation Proclamation was passed, which legally ended slavery in all territories held by Union troops, the South was facing more fears than ever.8 Once Abraham Lincoln was finally able to pick his preferred general named Ulysses S. Grant, who took control of the Union and was able to make some progress and defeat the opposing side.
Numbers speak volumes and lead to advantages. The North had roughly 2,100,000 men serving and the Confederates had about half of that number.9 What is really interesting is hundreds of thousands of men volunteered on each side during the beginning of the war, and those numbers dropped like flies.
