Non-Verbal Behavior with Strangers

This boredom or state of determination reveals a perceived higher sense of self or higher sense than that of the person they are not engaging eye contact with. Rather than engaging in a friendly greeting with a person passing by, Larson would claim that the individual either could not be bothered or that the person is far more interested in another matter (Larson 288). Larson would claim that those parties looking at the ground are displaying a sign of submission. This behavior would express a lacking of confidence in self-perception. This behavior is also similar, but not the same, as the power function of eye contact when speakers drop their chin when they are taking their turn in listening by transmitting their attention to the speaker (Larson 288). .
I found two results of those parties that engaged in eye contact. The first instance, being the more common scenario, was before eye contact was engaged lasted for about one second, the eye contact was averted to the following: the ground, off to the distance, or back to their mobile phone. I concluded that this eye behavior allowed the other party to return their attention to something that was subconsciously considered more comfortable for them. Conclusively, this eye behavior expresses the insecurity of the opposite party. The second instance as a result of eye contact I found of those parties that engaged in eye contact for longer than one second had behavior that varied based on the sex of the opposite party. Females tended to be more likely to engage in a friendly greeting of either returning a smile or in some instances responded by saying "hi" or "hello" after my initial friendly smile to them. Males tended to be more likely to engage in a nod of the head up or downward, or by saying, "sup" or "what's up". The males tended to express confusion when I would initially smile at them, so I began to use the tactic, mirroring of their facial expression, which led me to get more responses.
